Teen Idols - Rebel Souls
Musician and Modern Drummer writer “Pistol” Pete Kaufmann will be conducting his clinic on “Big Picture Drumming” at Warlock Drum studios in Downtown Jersey City, Saturday, November 9th, from 1 to 3pm. Big Picture Drumming is based on Pistol’s Modern Drummer Magazine educational piece and concepts will be geared towards the “working drummer” or drummers who would like to work more often. WHO IS BIG PICTURE DRUMMING FOR? Big Picture Drumming is for drummers who are stuck in a rut. Big Picture Drumming is for drummers who don’t like practicing-or don’t know what to practice. Big Picture Drumming is for drummers who are looking for more inspiration and need fresh, new ideas. Big Picture Drumming is for drummers who play as a hobbie or for a profession. Big Picture Drumming is a more holistic approach to playing drums. Big Picture Drumming is for drummers who want to gig and work more. WHO IS BIG PICTURE DRUMMING NOT FOR? Big Picture Drumming is NOT for drummers who want to learn how to play super fast. Big Picture Drumming is NOT for drummers who want to see Pistol solo for 2 hours straight. Big Picture Drumming is NOT for drummers who want to play complicated patterns with their hands while playing tricky ostinatos with their feet. Big Picture Drumming is not for drummers who want to impress others with their playing. Topics covered will consist of: The “Add And Subtract” Method : Becoming more musical and breaking out of muscle memory. Muscle memory is important and can take years to develop, but it can also become a crutch that can hold back new ideas, spontaneity, and creativity. Natural Body Movement Approach: How to move around the kit more fluidily, faster, and with less effort (AKA-How to play drums night after night without injuring yourself- especially in middle age). Pistol created this approach from studying with Joe Morello and Chad Wackerman (and also out of neccessity when he turned 40). How to Keep Solid Time on a Gig WITHOUT a Click: the pros and cons of playing with a click and how to play consistently night after night without one. Pete came up with this concept when he was touring with Claude Coleman Jr.-who refused to use a click live. After much trial and error, he came up with a solution. The Spotlight Technique and Overcoming Stage Fright and Nervousness: How to remove anxiety, pressure, and play your best in front of a crowd. A few tried and true mental techniques that Pete has used over the years when dealing with high-stress gigs/concerts. How to Create More Interesting Drum Parts and Play More Musically. A few simple and easy techniques that will help you craft the perfect drum part for whatever song you are learning. Half of it Pete created, the other half came from Steve Gadd and Grady Tate. How to Hit the Drums Properly and Develop a Stronger Groove: Play the f@#king drums like you mean it (and let everyone else know you mean business). ”Playing advanced things just because you can might impress a few tech heads—but most listeners won’t give a damn how slick you are.Big picture drumming—also known as playing for the song—involves looking at music as a whole, not as small parts like drum beats and fills. It’s also about not being obsessed with leaving your specific mark on the music. “A lot of drummers don’t get this concept. Many tend to be impressed with technique, speed, and complexity, which to them defines what’s hip and what’s not. But technique alone does not equal musicality. “Technique is often overrated and misunderstood. We certainly need technique to communicate our musical ideas. But technique should be a bridge between the creative mind and the physical body—and that’s it!” -Pistol Pete Kaufmann Warlock Drum Company will be giving out prizes and special discounts ON DAY OF EVENT ONLY. *Tickets will not be refunded if you cancel. *Due to space size, seating will be VERY limited.
